CRUISE CONTROL

I hadn’t sailed a remote control boat in about 20 years when I met Chuck LeMahieu at a regatta in San Diego that I was shooting back in 2019. He is the US DF95 distributor and he quickly had me hooked. The DragonFlite 95 remote-control high-performance sailboat is a challenge and it is a blast. For someone who loves a bit of competition and working things out – I have become a bit obsessed with having a tricked-out boat – tuning the boat for different weather conditions and courses (See the slightly embarrassing but equally flattering Sailing World article by Dave Reed below). It takes some practice and you have to get it right at the dock. Unlike a full-size race boat there are no changes on-board. In addition to the challenge, the gangs of friends I have met and reconnected with has been great too. Over the past year, I’ve gotten the opportunity to sail with fun folks in Georgia, South Carolina, Florida and Rhode Island – From Bruce Farr and some of the 11th Hour crew – to amateur sailors and enthusiasts alike. It’s impressive, no matter your experience level, you can ace the race or shit the bed.

DAY 1: 12 METRE WORLDS / NEWPORT, RHODE ISLAND

The International 12 Metre Class’ 2019 World Championship got off to a light start yesterday. Despite the light winds – sails were looking pretty lofty – something I never tire of photographing. Hosted by the Ida Lewis Yacht Club in conjunction with the 12 Metre Yacht Club – it is the largest-ever gathering of 12 Metre yachts in the US with more than two-dozen boats from seven countries. The teams boast an impressive roster of elite sailors, including America’s Cup veterans and Olympic medalists that represent Australia, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Italy, Norway and the United States. The fleet includes 7 America’s Cup defenders and challengers with 12 Metre Yachts that span 1928 to 1987. NYYC ONE DESIGN REGATTA 2019

GOODBYE NEWPORT, HELLO COWES

The Transatlantic Race, which covers approximately 3,000 nautical miles, was organized cooperatively, by the Royal Yacht Squadron, New York Yacht Club, Royal Ocean Racing Club and Storm Trysail Club. The Transatlantic Race began at the NYYC on June 25th and the competitors are expected to arrive in Cowes between July 1 - 3rd. Currently, Wizard is leading the pack of 14 boats and you can track the race through the YB Race Tracker.

ONE SAIL IN THE AIR FOR THE BIG CITY, STREET LIGHTS, BIG DREAMS, ALL LOOKIN' PRETTY

The SailGP Race in New York City was one of my fave gigs by far this year. Cruising past Lady Liberty on the Hudson gave me just as much of a charge as it did witnessing some of the best sailors navigating the tricky winds and weather coming off of the city. Tricky conditions meant tricky photo ops. Check out the coverage over on Sailing World & SailGP.

THE RESOLUTE CUP GETS DOWN IN NEWPORT

Out of the 28 teams that competed at the NYYC Resolute Cup in Newport, RI., San Diego Yacht Club showed up for the victory. Congrats to the SDYC, skipper Tyler Sinks with crew Nick Martin, Nick Kaschack and Max Hutchinson. It’s always great to be on the water shooting in Newport, no matter what the conditions. CARDIFF BOUND

The Volvo Ocean Race Newport stopover ended today as the boats raced their last in-port race and began the next leg to Cardiff. After days of nasty weather, the fog lifted and the breeze pushed on cue for the start. Team Brunel was the skilled winner of both in-port races, but Mapfre and Dongfeng definitely stirred things up. FINE ART PRINTS: THE AMERICA'S CUP

We were so happy to get this snap from one of our clients who is interested in all things America’s Cup. Our client chose from the work of Paul Mello. Mello’s impressive collection of photographs capture a distinct era in the sport. Originally shot on film and meticulously scanned by the photographer himself, Mello’s America’s Cup images are thoughtful compositions that demonstrate his romance with sailing. The photographs — covering the 70’s to the 80’s —represent a vibrant time in sailing: Newport, Rhode Island, classic boat aesthetic and certainly the drama of Ted Turner’s pursuit of the cup.

LIGHT OF THE WORLDS

For a sport photographer the J Worlds was a true highlight this summer. If you missed it – you missed out. These commanding boats and the level of athleticism of these sailors is impressive. The conditions too presented a great challenge — thick fog to blue skies. The push to get a great shot was worth it all in the end. Sailing World produced a great feature article with Kimball Livingston that I am proud to have collaborated with on my images. No matter how many times I see my work in print it gives me a thrill. Hopefully you get a chance to grab a copy.
